Western performance horse sport is built on a simple idea: horse and rider working together so seamlessly it looks effortless.
But anyone who has spent time around great horses knows there's nothing effortless about it.
On March 28, 2026, that partnership will be on full display when The Showdown arrives at the Nutrien Western Event Centre on the grounds of the legendary Calgary Stampede.
This one-day event will bring together some of Canada's top riders and horses to compete in reining, cutting, and working cowhorse, three disciplines that define the athleticism, instinct, and tradition of Western horsemanship.
For fans, it's a rare opportunity to see all three in one arena.
For competitors, it represents countless hours of preparation, training, and trust built between horse and rider.
And as a proud sponsor, Alberta Boot Company Outfitters is honored to support the athletes and horses carrying these traditions forward.
Reining: Precision, Power, and the Perfect Sliding Stop
Reining is one of the most visually striking events in Western performance horse sport.
Horse and rider perform a set pattern of maneuvers designed to demonstrate control, responsiveness, and athleticism with rapid spins, sweeping circles, lightning-fast lead changes, and the crowd-favorite: the sliding stop.
When executed perfectly, the cues are nearly invisible, and the horse moves as if reading the rider's mind.
For competitor Laurianne Gagnon Duval, the discipline always comes back to the relationship with the horse. "The connection with the horse is the most special thing for me. The way the relationship and the mindset change everything."
Few moments in reining hold a candle to the thrill of a perfectly executed sliding stop. "A perfect stop is so rewarding," she says. "From the moment you go around that corner to the run down and a stop that feels like nothing. It is the most special feeling."
Like many riders preparing for The Showdown, Laurianne balances training with life beyond the arena. "Being a full-time working mom with two little ones, I'm so grateful to have help from my village to prepare for this event while managing everything else."
Cutting: When the Horse Takes the Lead
If reining showcases control, cutting showcases instinct.
The rider separates a single cow from a herd and then drops the reins, allowing the horse to track the cow's movements and prevent it from returning to the group. The result is a lightning-fast exchange of anticipation and reaction.
For Tyler Darroch, it's the horse's intelligence that makes the sport so compelling, "The horse's ability to think on their own."
Great cutting horses are known for their "cow sense," an almost uncanny ability to read the cow before it moves. When it comes time to step into the pen, Tyler keeps his focus simple. "I just think about the cows."
Beyond the competition itself, events like The Showdown help strengthen the broader Canadian horse industry, "Anytime we can support the Canadian horse industry is important," he says. "It's great that Alberta Boot came on as a team sponsor. When Canadian companies support events and associations in Canada, it helps everything grow."
Working Cowhorse: Where Precision Meets Grit
Working cowhorse combines two essential elements of Western horsemanship: reining precision and cattle control.
Competitors first complete a reining-style pattern that demonstrates the horse's training and responsiveness. Then the cow work begins, turning a single cow along the fence before driving it into fast circles in the open arena.
It's a discipline that demands versatility, speed, and complete trust between horse and rider.
For Brady Jensen, the joy comes from working with exceptional horses, "I enjoy riding an extremely well-broke, athletic horse and working together."
When he rides into the arena at The Showdown, the moment represents something deeper than competition, "I am blessed to get to do what I do."
